2-day Classroom: Introduction to Clinical Research at Emory

2-Day Introduction to Clinical Research at Emory course is a mandatory training for new and existing clinical research coordinators, research nurses, fellows, and residents to Emory and Emory affiliates coordinating FDA-regulated clinical trials. The course is designed to provide a basic framework of the roles and responsibilities to equip clinical research coordinators, research nurses, fellows, and residents with the tools to be successful in their job roles at Emory.  The course is an instructor-led and students participate in course discussions and activities. 14 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ is issued as continuing credits when requested. All individuals in a position to control the educational content of this activity (faculty, planner, reviewers, etc) disclosed they had no financial relationships with commercial interests.

Note: If you are functioning in a coordinator role on FDA-regulated clinical trials (i.e.  day-to-day management of protocol, consenting subjects) and have less than 5 years of experience at Emory or an Emory affiliate, you must take the course in the classroom environment unless you provide proof of 5 years or more of clinical research experience + formal GCP certification to OCR@emory.edu. Formal GCP certification would be from a pharma or industry organization. Hire information and/or resumes/CVs will be verified.

AHA Basic Life Support (BLS or CPR)

AHA Basic Life Support (BLS or CPR) is a course offered by the Office for Clinical Research to teach Emory University Clinical Research Staff on the skills of CPR for victims of all ages, including the use of an automated external defibrillator and the relief of choking. The course is video-based with instructor-led discussions and simulations. Students participate in, practice and complete various skills and learning stations. 

The course is only provided to Emory University clinical research staff who need Emory Healthcare credentialing.  If you are not aware that you require Emory Healthcare credentialing, please contact Myra Kitchin, EHC Credentialing Verification Specialist, at 404-712-0510 or myra.kitchin@emoryhealthcare.org.  Per your Emory University job title, please review the Clinical Research Role Matrix to understand your roles and responsibilities.

AHA CPR Skills Assessment only

AHA CPR Skills Assessment (only) - is a skills check-off assessment provided by the Office for Clinical Research to provide Emory University Clinical Research Staff.  The learner will complete all requirements for CPR training on-line with AHA for a monetary fee, but complete the skills assessment in-person with OCR if he/she is to be credentialed by Emory Healthcare.

  • Renewal: Yes, every 2 years. 
  • Course Frequency: Weekly.
  • Course Dates: Tuesdays and Thursdays. Complete the CPR Assessment Registration form and confirm your time slot.
  • Course Pre-requisite:  Complete the on-line course, Part I at https://onlineaha.org. Bring the certificate to skill assessment check-off.
  • Course Registration:  There are two parts to registration, which are:

Part I – On-line course

    1. Login in at https://onlineaha.org.
    2. Not yet registered?  Sign Up at https://onlineaha.org/users/sign_up.
    3. Complete the registration page, which will direct you to “ My Courses.”  There should not be any active courses.
    4. At the top of the page, click “Course Catalog.”
    5. Click “Add Cart” for 'HeartCode BLS.' The cost is $28.00.
    6. Click “Check out.”
    7. Click “I agree.”
    8. Complete order summary.
    9. Return to “My Courses.”
    10. The course will be listed for them to launch and complete.
    11. After you finish the course, print the certificate of completion to bring to the in-person skills check-off with OCR.

Part II – Skills Assessment Only

    1. Complete the CPR Assessment Registration form to schedule your CPR skills assessments check off. We complete them on Tuesdays between 9:00 am -12:00 pm and Thursdays between 1:00 pm -4:00 pm.  Contact us at OCR@Emory.edu to confirm your time slot. The check off should only take 30 minutes and we will complete them at the 1599 Clifton Road building.
    2. Bring a copy of the BLS for Healthcare Providers On-line Part 1 certificate of completion in order to receive credit.  
    3. After completion, we will notify Myra Kitchins (EHC Credentialing Specialist) that training was completed, if needed.
    4. You will be notified when your card has arrived for pick-up.

Collaborative Institutional Training Initative (CITI) - Biomedical Focus

Collaborative Institutional Training Initative (CITI) Biomedical Focus is a course offered by the University of Miami in collaboration with Emory University Institutional Review Board (IRB).  The course is web-based and required prior to submitting research protocols for review and approval for all Key Personnel listed on the Emory IRB submission, regardless of their position.  For those completing human subjects research, you must complete CITI  Biomedical Focus Group (either Stage 1 - Basic or Stage 3 - Refresher).

  • Renewal: Yes, every 3 years.
  • Course Frequency: 24/7 Distance Learning On-line.
  • Course Dates: On-line.
  • Course Pre-requisite:  N/A.

  • Renewal: No.  However, additional modules will be added in the CITI Biomedical Refresher to cover GCP & ICH requirements.

Conflict of Interest (COI) Training

Conflict of Interest training is a course offered by the Office of Conflict of Interest (COI) for faculty and staff to certify that they have received information about Emory's policies and the federal regulations on Objectivity in Research.  Federal regulations require that Institutions receiving funding from the US Public Health Service provide training to their Investigators about the federal regulations, the Institution’s policy, and Investigators’ responsibilities under the policy and regulations. The training is required to be documented and provided using the electronic Conflict of Interest (eCOI) system.  

eCOI is a University and Healthcare system-wide tool that helps to implement Emory's policies and procedures regarding financial interests and external activities. This application and reporting process is used by Emory University and Emory Healthcare only

Electronic Medical Records Documentation (EeMR) for Research Nurses

Electronic Medical Records (EeMR) Documentation (for Research Nurses) is a course offered by the Office for Clinical Research in collaboration with Emory Healthcare to instruct research nurses on how to navigate EeMR uses clinical research templates to document relative research information.

Note: Must have an Emory Healthcare username and password before attending class.  Also, must have "Document Viewing" as an EeMR navigational menu option.

Emory Research Management System (ERMS)

Emory Research Management System (ERMS) is a course offered by the Office for Clinical Research to instruct clinical research staff on how to navigate ERMS and how to work with the different modules, e.g., study, subject, and visit tracking modules.  The course is an instructor-led demonstration and simulation. Note: Training is required to gain access to a study in ERMS.  The course is for faculty and staff who will be enrolling subjects and or tracking subject's visits.

Emory Proposal Express (EPEX)

Emory Proposal Express (EPEX) training is to assist clinical research staff with budget development, electronic routing, and institution approval related to extramural funding at Emory. EPEX replaces the SPAF (Sponsored Programs Approval Form) and is a necessary accompaniment to any Grant or Contract requiring Institutional endorsement. The course is an instructor-led demonstration and simulation. Students participate in, practice and complete modules within EPEX. HIPAA (Privacy, Security, and Research)

Office of Compliance (OC) offers Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) training to cover various components that involve protected health information (PHI) and electronic PHI. The ACTSI -Clinical Research Network and Emory Medical Labortary offers Phlebotomory Training 101: Introduction to Venipuncture.  The course will include:

    3. Print module certificate to be submitted as prerequisite for Phlebotomy Training 101 participation.

WCI CPOE Training for Non-Medication Orders

WCI CPOE Training for Non-Medication Orders offers Emory's Winship Cancer Institute and Radiation Oncology clinical research staff with the skills to enter non-medication orders in PowerChart for the Principal Investigator. 

Note:  WCI and Radiation Oncology staff must receive access to the Powerchart as a "Clinical Research Coordinator" before accessing Powerchart.  A list of access coordinators can be found by logging into Emory Healthcare VDT and entering the link http://www.ourehc.org/departments/is/Security/aclist.html into a web browser.
